The Maurice Sendak Community School: PS 118

The Maurice Sendak Community School is a public school in Brooklyn, with a significant community of underfunded students and students living in the local shelter. This public school does not have an art teacher on staff. MAPS has been providing arts integration residencies since 2018, and in 2023 we began offering weekly art lessons to the entire preK-5 elementary school over a three month period. We incorporated social studies curricula as we created animal masks, sculptures, drawings, paintings, prints and more! We experimented with various art materials, many were totally new to the students, as we got messy and made a ton of art. At the end of the residency, MAPS hung the work throughout the entire school.
